You will too exist treated to some peaks into the wonderful New York apartment she shares with her partner Stan (pictured below) and I created a brusque video with her.

Tin can you lot tell the states near more nearly yourself?

I am a native New Yorker born on the Lower East Side. Other than 11 years spent in the San Francisco Bay area I have just lived in NYC or the surface area.

I went to San Francisco when I was 22 to graduate school at University of California, Berkeley in the late sixty'southward. Everything was happening so and in that location. I studied Fabric Pattern but my thesis was on textiles related to the body and I called them Gristly Raiments.

There was nil traditional about them in form or materials but I used ancient and traditional techniques such as basketry, netting, knotting and knitting. This was even before Article of clothing Art.

I accept dressed up and played with clothes and textiles since I am 3. It was encouraged and immune…this gave me and my sis the chance to explore and experiment through play.

DebraRapoport-6opt

As a point of reference which age group exercise you belong to or perhaps you are willing to share your age?

I am proudly seventy.

DebraRapoport-7opt

Can you tell united states of america a flake more about your website Viva Le Hat and why you created information technology?

My website was done to promote and publicize my newest hats made from Viva paper towels.

I want HATS to LIVE, to come up Live again. I desire to see more women bring hats back!! Information technology is a simple website mostly with videos and articles almost me, my process and Avant-garde Style.

DebraRapoport-2opt

You are also one of the half dozen amazing women featured in the Advanced Mode movie. What impact has this had on your life?

It has had a very big effect on my life.

Knowing Ari and having him in my life as a friend has been very enriching.

The Advanced Style Movement has really go a movement! I bask meeting and greeting people who come to NY Metropolis, who follow and admire Ari's work and the film that Lina Plioplyte filmed and directed.

My partner Stan and I create gatherings ofttimes to bring Advanced Style ladies and men and younger admirers together. There is a lot of adoration and appreciation between the younger and older. It's always a joy to meet the interaction. This helps to build and reinforce the community.

DebraRapoport-3opt

With my visibility it has opened more than opportunities for me to continue to teach. I teach at MAD (Museum of Arts and Design) MOMA (Museum of Modernistic Fine art), Eileen Fisher'due south "Dark-green Eileen" organization, up cycling and re purposing her garments into personal adornments, embellishments and hats. This is primarily what I like to teach besides every bit unique HATS.

I receive emails or comments on Facebook regularly. When I walk around NYC (and out of NYC as well) I become recognized at least iii times a day…and information technology is most frequently by men and woman under xxx. And then the impact on younger people is quite phenomenal!!

DebraRapoport-17opt

You vesture and create the almost astonishing hats. Can you lot tell us a bit more nearly your craft and where you become your ideas?

HATS …well, annihilation is a lid! A vase, a lamp shade and a hat are all interchangeable! Think nigh information technology, I have oftentimes worn a lamp shade as a hat. I have used a hat as a vase. And so a chapeau is simply a vessel.

The non-traditional materials I use are the indicate of divergence…such as industrial felt, banana fiber paper or Viva newspaper towels. Then I just commencement building directly on my head.

That is where the inspiration comes from. I always accept to start with my caput and face; I can't build a chapeau on a hat block/class! Everything comes from MY A/B/Cs…I Assemble/Build/Construct with whatever materials I am working with.

DebraRapoport-19opt

Why is a hat so important to your style?

It literally "tops off" a look…it is a finishing touch. Sometimes it IS the most important element. I believe in "Frame the Face up". Information technology is our most important characteristic and so let's lite it upwards! Too a hat I feel a boa, scarf, breast plate or bib are interesting forms that heighten the confront. This is often a title of my workshops "Boas, Bibs, and Chest Plates!"

Information technology is always amazing what creations come up out of this as a starting point.

DebraRapoport-10opt

Do y'all have any tips for other women who would dearest to incorporate a lid or more inventiveness into their style?

Be bold but starting time slowly. Many women don't feel comfortable in a hat or they recollect they don't expect good in one. Like anything new, play and experiment. At home put all kinds of things on your head to deviate from what yous call back a hat needs to expect like.

When trying on a hat always wear some makeup…at least lipstick because you will feel more dressed and feel the lid as a new adventure. You lot will encounter your unabridged face and persona in a different fashion. It just might be scary at first…but go for it.

Discover who you actually are!! Really!! This is the same approach to one's overall way. Nothing is permanent so y'all can't fall also far.

How would you describe your style?

Eclectic/artistic/personal

DebraRapoport-9opt

What would you consider the almost important components of your style?

Well, I always start with the overall elements of color, texture and layering. Along with that hats and makeup are crucial. To me at that place are no natural beauties.

Everyone can stand a scrap of enhancement and it'southward fun. The same elements of A/B/C – Assembling, Building and Amalgam are how I create my mode.

DebraRapoport-18opt

Where practice you live and how does that influence your style?

Living in NY City allows me to really be my ain person. Not but does information technology allow me just encourages me because people reply and react in a adept fashion.

One woman on the subway sitting reverse me, watched me for a while and and so as she was getting off at her stop, she leaned over and said "Thank you for making NYC a more beautiful place" I was actually astounded.

Do you feel you have a signature manner?

Yeah because information technology is not near trends or fashion per se. I ain things for years and decades. When information technology is good, it is proficient and can go on to be correct for you.

I love putting things together in dissimilar ways and combinations. I will sometimes purchase a garment for its material or a particular then change information technology to my liking.

DebraRapoport-11opt

What inspires your outfit choices the near?

Whatever I have in front of me stimulates me in that moment. I don't shop often simply practise enjoy thrift shops (clemency shops) because you never know what you will find. I honey the search. That is the challenge. Too part of the challenge is that I'll but spend $5 because there is nothing I really need. I experience "frugality is fun".

DebraRapoport-21opt

Practise you take things like color profiling or body type into account when you dress?

I call up I know what looks skilful on me and what makes me experience practiced so that automatically means I am considering my trunk type. I dearest color and there is no color I don't beloved to vesture. I hardly habiliment black but occasionally as an accent because it can brand things pop! It is all near how you put things together.

Has your fashion changed at all afterwards turning forty?

Well I accept always done the colour/texture/layering story…every bit long as I retrieve. Really later on l my body changed somewhat and along the way I lost about 25 pounds.

Never really working at it and it has stayed off. I think every bit I get older I am more relaxed. I don't consume out of nervousness and I am non every bit stressed. I permit life to unfold at this point. I feel like I did nearly of the difficult piece of work and I can relish the fruits now. Function of that is feeling I can be as flamboyant and outspoken as I like at anytime.

DebraRapoport-20opt

Do y'all believe in dressing 'historic period appropriately' and what does it mean to you?

I really don't know what that ways. Don't look also foolish and don't go looking for youthfulness. Savor the age you are. It really is Better with Age. Focus on your health equally function of the process and brand that a fun affair.

Would you say that at this stage of your life you are now more, or less interested in mode, style and the style you look?

Well, I now have a reputation to keep (smiling). I do care because the better I await the better I experience. Also the process of dressing is a meditation and a way of having quiet artistic time to get centered. It is not about the shopping and keeping upwardly with fashion. It is about a creative lifestyle.

DebraRapoport-13opt

Why is the style you look of import to y'all?

Because I'm an artist and information technology is a visual experience for me as well as a visual experience for those around me, I feel then much "brighter" or live when I put myself together in a way that satisfies me.

Do you follow trends? And if yep, which trends excite you at the moment?

No I don't and l couldn't even guess what trend is current!

DebraRapoport-14opt

Do you have whatever way and style tips for women over 40?

DebraRapoport-22opt

Encounter what makes you comfy, and then stretch a bit and step outside the box. Start with an unusual color combination, or add something boosted like a second or third scarf or a big cervix slice. Even endeavour a hat!

What are your plans for your website and your business and how practise yous come across it develop over the coming years?

I am non really sure. I love the existent people to people contact. I used to say I'd rather practise ME-Commerce than E-Commerce. I practise both. I see though how many new friends I have made because of the Advanced Style blog, volume and film.

So I'd dearest for that to continue. I desire to be the ambassador of Advanced Fashion and encourage others young and old to tap into THEIR creativity.

Debra Rapoport | 40plusstyle.com

I honey selling my hats and other embellishments because I love seeing them on others. I love knowing that they are excited to run across something new and unlike. I want to continue to teach and encourage others to be creative and work with re cycled and non-traditional materials. Information technology is about personal creativity.

"With creativity in that location are no rules. Where there are no rules, there is no fearfulness!" This is my mantra!
